For the first time in Highland history, Highland High School Speech and Debate Team emerged as champions of the Akron District Speech & Debate Tournament! Held on February 1, Highland out ranked 13 teams to capture the prestigious District title!
Not only is this a tremendous team accomplishment as they beat out the second place team by a half-point (.5), but an additional 28 members qualified for the State Tournament to be held on March 6-7 in Wooster. They include Ava Shaffer and Mia Shaffer, Policy Debate; Gracelin Gorman and Emma Vomero, Policy Debate; Rachel Burns, Declamation; Morraeah Beranek, Dramatic Interpretation; Victoria Farrell, Dramatic Interpretation; Maggie Price and Jordanne Oberhaus, Duo Interpretation; Eris Foutz, Humorous Interpretation; Bryce Shepard, 1st Alternate in Humorous Interpretation; Elizabeth Oberhaus, Informative Speaking; Kourtney Carr, Informative Speaking; Maxwell Mendel, Informative Speaking; Tess Gallaspie, 1st Alternate in Informative Speaking; Andersen Mast, 1st Alternate in United States Extemporaneous Speaking; Dylan Jones, International Extemporaneous Speaking; Sarah Karkoff, Lincoln Douglas Debate; Brian Busch, Lincoln Douglas Debate; Grace Stiller, Original Oratory; Kayla Starcher, Original Oratory; Brooke Wightman, Original Oratory; Megan Austin and Garrett Wright, Public Forum Debate; as well as Congressional Debaters Emma Pappas, Beau Bilinovich, Aaron Neil and Lauren Riley.
Five team members pre-qualified early on for the State Tournament including Evan Buck, U.S. Extemporaneous Speaking; Jacob McPherson, U.S. Extemporaneous Speaking; Madelyn MacMurray and Olivia Russo, Public Forum Debate; and Kennedy Shelton, Program of Oral Interpretation.
