Academic Acceleration for Advanced Learners
Academic Acceleration for Advanced Learners
Academic acceleration is a placement in a higher grade or course than is typical given the student’s age. Ohio law (Ohio Revised Code 3324.10) requires all public school districts to have policies for evaluating students referred for academic acceleration. Highland’s Acceleration Policy po5408 outlines our process for referrals and evaluations.
Highland uses the Iowa Acceleration Scale (IAS), Third Edition as a guide to acceleration reviews. Using this acceleration scale requires ability and achievement testing as part of the Acceleration Review Process. For this reason, the Permission to Test form must be completed with the Request for an Acceleration Review.
Click here to access the Request for Acceleration Review Form with the Permission to Test.
Forms can be dropped off at the Highland Board of Education Office or scanned and sent to the Board of Education Office Secretary: Lily Holcepl lholcepl@highlandschools.org.
Types of Acceleration
Whole Grade Acceleration, including Early Entrance to Kindergarten
In a whole grade acceleration, a student will move to the next grade completely. Entering kindergarten before a child turns 5 is considered a whole grade acceleration. Once the acceleration is completed, the new grade level becomes the child’s permanent placement.

Important Notice for Early Entrance to Kindergarten Few children qualify for early entrance to kindergarten. Please make sure that you prepare childcare arrangements as a contingency. Preschool programs routinely fill up quickly. It is recommended that you register your child for preschool but let the preschool know that your child is being screened for early entrance to kindergarten. Reviews for early entrance to kindergarten begin in March. If you are considering early entrance to kindergarten for your child, please submit your Request for Acceleration Review as soon as possible. |
Subject Acceleration
This type of acceleration occurs when a student moves ahead to a grade level in one or more subject areas but retains his or her overall grade level.
Early Graduation
This type of acceleration occurs when a student meets the requirements for graduation in less than four academic years, graduates from high school, and matriculates to post-secondary education.
