Dear Parent/Guardian,

We are nearing the end of our language arts unit on the class novel, The Outsiders.  It was a huge success, with many students enlightened and intrigued by the story.  It also sparked reader interest in the author, S.E. Hinton.  It is my hope that your children will remember this book for years to come.

As an extension activity, we will be watching the movie edition to The Outsiders.  This movie has been re-rated PG-13 due to some mature language, violence, teen drinking and smoking.  The purpose of watching this movie is for the students to compare and contrast the movie with the novel and to practice the art of critique.  Please fill out and return the below form if you would prefer to NOT have your child watch the movie in class.  I will need the form returned by Friday, December 12, 2008.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Reynolds and Mrs. Raub

I do not give permission for my child, _____________________________ to watch the movie The Outsiders in class.  I understand that this will not affect his/her grade in language arts.  Instead, my child will be given an alternative assignment comparing/contrasting the characters in the book.
