Highland Middle School’s Vocal Music Department has much to offer students. We are excited to take the joy of music to higher levels each year, and hope that the students will learn to become more and more involved. We intend that this website will answer a lot of questions you may have about our program.
The following information may answer some of your questions. At this website you will find our general classroom rules and procedures, grading policy, concert dates, rules on concert attire, and information about our OMEA contest opportunities this year.
General Expectations: 1. Follow directions at all times. 2. Listen attentively. 3. Raise your hand to be called upon. 4. Treat people and property with respect. 5. Be an active participant in class.
Procedures: 1. Automatic detentions will be assigned for: a. Tardiness-you must be in your seat when it is time for class to begin. Anyone tardy to homeroom must sign in at the main office. b. Gum or candy-gum chewing or any kind of other food or drink (besides water) is not permitted in the classroom. c. Profanity-ANY use of obscenity or vulgar language will not be tolerated. 2. Rehearsal guidelines: a. Listen carefully. Do not talk while I am talking. b. Sit quietly if I am working with another section. c. When it is time to sing, please make sure that you are sitting up straight in your chairs and your feet flat on the floor. Good posture creates better sound! 4. Concerts: These are the final results of all your hard work! Everyone is required to perform. Enjoy the spotlight! 5. Grades: a. 50% Daily Grade-participation, preparation, and behavior in class. You are expected to come to choir with your folder and pencil. Three points are available to earn each day. b. 30% Classwork-tests, group work, folders, sight-reading and in-class performances. c. 20% Concert Performance-attendance and after-concert evaluation. The day after a concert is very important for reflecting on what occurred the night before.
