The 2007-2008 Highland elementary school reading program is called “Reading Does a Body Good.” Students are challenged to read 500 minutes each month during their free time. They will keep track of their minutes on special calendars which will be signed by parents and returned to school.
THEMES
There will be several sub-themes that revolve around the larger theme, “Reading Does a Body Good.”
October/November: “Exercise Does a Body Good”
Not only should students read their 500 minutes, they will be encouraged to do simple exercises such as jumping rope, riding their bikes or raking leaves.
December/January: “Kindness Does a Body Good”
Students will be given a checklist of good deed suggestions including: helping clean up the house, calling a sick relative or writing a thank you note.
February/March: “Healthy Habits Do a Body Good”
Students will be encouraged to adopt some good habits such as making their bed or turning off the TV to read a book.
April/May: “Creativity Does a Body Good”
During the spring months, students will be encouraged to think outside the box and paint a picture or make a spring flower arrangement.
