HMS Stock Market Team Takes Top Spot
Congratulations to members of the Highland Middle School Stock Market Team that emerged as the top team in the State of Ohio among all elementary and middle school teams and 14th in the State out of 1540 total teams, including high school. The Stock Market Game™ program is designed to heighten core academic subjects including math, social studies and language arts and teaches students about the importance of saving and investing. The HMS team played the game from February through mid-April and started with a virtual cash account of $100,000. They finished with $111,762.35. The team strived to create the best-performing portfolio using a live trading simulation. In building a portfolio, students researched and evaluated stocks, and made decisions based on what they learned. Teams traded common stocks and mutual funds from the NYSE and NASDAQ exchanges; earned interest on cash balances; paid interest if bought on margin and paid a commission on all trades. To determine why certain stocks performed the way they did, or why the broader market moved up or down, they needed to understand how the economy works, and to calculate their returns they needed to do the math. Students used real internet research and news updates, which made the simulation an even better mirror of the real marketplace. Pictured from left are team members of the MEME J’s, which consists of HMS 6th graders Madeleine Nolte, Ella Foutz, Margaret Knyszek, Emma McDonald, Jennifer Lin and Emily Beal. A special thanks is extended to team advisors and HMS teachers Charles Franchetti and Sandy Schilling.

Social internet networking sites are an effective method to communicate and exchange information. Highland Schools employs Twitter and Facebook accounts as another media outlet for our community.  However, there have been times that school personnel and/or law enforcement agencies are made aware of derogatory, vulgar and profane comments posted on student Facebook pages, or similar social networking sites.  If your student has an account, insist on monitoring the postings and pages closely. As parent, you should have all login and password information for your children's accounts.
