School buses are an undervalued aspect of a day on the road. Between September and June they lumber along, day in and day out, performing the thankless task of transporting children to and from school. And unless we happen to be stuck behind one when we’re running late, we don't pay them much notice.
Many parents just don’t realize that the school bus is the SAFEST mode of transportation for getting students back and forth to school. Students are about 50 times more likely to arrive at school alive if they ride the bus instead of driving themselves or pooling with other teen drivers—and more than 20 times safer than if they ride with a parent or other adult. Simply put, school buses are built to reduce rider fatalities and injuries in a crash.
Bus drivers at Highland Local Schools undergo several hours of training and refresher courses and follow state mandated safety procedures. The safety of our children is our highest priority.
