There will be an 8th grade NJHS meeting on Monday, Nov. 3.  On Tuesday, Nov. 4, 7th grade NJHS members will meet.  Both meetings will be held in the library from 2:30-3:15.  If anyone cannot attend the meeting for their grade level, they may attend the other one.  Everyone should try to come to one of the meetings.

 

 

What is NJHS?

The National Junior Honor Society or NJHS is an organization of seventh and eighth grade students who qualify. NJHS is more than just an honor roll. Grades are just one of five areas by which students are chosen. Membership is an honor bestowed upon students by the faculty on the basis of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship and character.

The National Junior Honor Society was established in 1929 as a wayof honoring outstanding students in the early years of their secondary education. Although it is a sister organization of the National Honor Society at the high school level, they are two separate organizations.  Membership in NJHS does not translate into membership in NHS at the high school. Selection of NHS members is based on a student's accomplishments at the high school level only.

Five main purposes of all NJHS chapters are "To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, to develop worthy school and community citizenship, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools."

 

Selection Process for National Junior Honor Society

Membership in NJHS is an honor that the faculty bestows upon a student. It is a reward for the student’s hard work and accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship and character. These five ideals are considered as a basis for membership. No student is selected simply because of a high academic average. The national guidelines for selection criteria are followed. Every effort is made to be fair and consistent in the selection process.


Scholarship is the most objective area. In order to be considered, a student must have achieved at least a 3.5 grade point average in each of the first three grading periods of the current academic year. Those students will be asked to provide more information about the other four areas in the form of an essay. This is not an application for membership. If they are not interested in becoming members, they simply need not complete the essay.

Students who turn in an essay are then rated by their teachers in the areas of classroom leadership, effort, cooperation and attitude. The school office provides information about the student’s behavior (number of detentions and suspensions and reasons for each).

All of this information is then brought before the faculty council, consisting of five teachers. They make the final decisions of who is selected for membership based on the information gathered. There are no limits to the number of students selected. New members are inducted into NJHS in a ceremony before the sixth and seventh grade student body. Parents are invited to attend.
