Highland Local School District Meals Introduce New Nutrition Standards
Over the past several years, Highland has offered many healthy choices with fresh vegetables, fruits, yogurts and whole grains. This year is no exception as we implement the new guidelines set forth in the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.
School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains and they must meet strict limits for saturated fat and portion size. Starting this fall, school lunches will meet additional standards requiring:
- Age-appropriate calorie limits
- Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of produce)
- A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
- Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat-free)
- More whole grains
- Less sodium
School meals are a great value and a huge convenience for busy families. Elementary lunch is $2.75, Middle and High school lunches are $3.00 and $3.50 for the deluxe lunch. Middle and High school also offer breakfast at $2.25. All meals include milk. Pre-payment options are available by registering for PaySchools Central (previously PayForit) or by sending in check or cash with your child.
We understand that your child’s nutrition and well-being are important to you and we are committed to nutrition excellence and education in our schools. We are always working to offer students healthier and tastier choices and as we continue to make additional healthy changes in our cafeterias, we thank you for your support.
Keep up to date with your child's lunch account and activity! There is no fee to view and monitor your child's lunch activity by clicking on the "PaySchools Central" link located on the right hand side of this page. There is a slight transaction fee if you choose to make an on-line payment at this site. Pre-payments can also be made by sending a check or cash with your child to school with your child's name and grade on the outside of the envelope.
Charging a lunch is not permitted. In an emergency only at the Elementary level, should a student not have lunch money the daily lunch will be provided and their account will be noted as a negative. If the student does not have money again the next day, a substitute lunch will be provided and applied to the negative account. The negative balance has to be repaid.
