Congratulations to Highland seniors Cecilia Mainzer and Nathan Gillin who were selected as the Medina County Kiwanis Students of the Month for November and to Brandon Yu and Ava Mastrianni who were named Students of the Month for December.
Cecilia Mainzer is an outstanding student at HHS. She is a Peer Leader, DARE Role Model, a member of the Speech & Debate Team, Sinfonia Orchestra, SADD, NHS and the HHS yearbook and newspaper staff. She was the recipient of the Magna Cum Laude Award for the National Latin Exam. Outside of Highland, she is an active member of both the Medina County Jr. Fair Board and Medina County Fashion & Nutrition Board, as well as the Ohio 4-H Teen Leadership Council. Cecilia, the daughter of Doug and Julie Mainzer of Hinckley Township, plans to attend the University of Akron next fall and study engineering.
Nathan Gillin is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Speech & Debate Team, Principal's Advisory Committee, Key Club and HHS yearbook and newspaper staff. He is a three-year varsity letterman on Highland’s Tennis Team where he was named an Ohio State Student Scholar Athlete and All-Gazette Honorable Mention. Also an active volunteer for the Easter Seals Annual Breakfast, Nathan plans to obtain a degree in film writing and business following his graduation from Highland. He is the son of Keith and Anne Gillin of Sharon Township.
Brandon Yu is involved in numerous AP and Honors classes at HHS and currently serves as Senior Class President. He is a member of Band Council, National Honor Society, Wrestling Team, Rugby and Track teams, and is a Peer Leader and DARE Role Model. He has a passion for music, which is demonstrated through his involvement in the Highland Heartbreakers, Marching Band and Concert Band, as well as his role in several school musical productions. He also serves as a volunteer for the Ohio Special Olympics. Brandon is the son of Bernadette and Edward Yu of Sharon Township and plans to attend the United States Naval Academy where he will pursue a degree in engineering and aviation.
Ava Mastrianni is a member of the Speech & Debate Team, Student Council and is the editor of the HHS yearbook. She is an avid photographer and has her own business called Pics by Ava. She has participated on the track and cross country teams, in addition to a competitive dance team, while also balancing school and work. Ava has received many awards for her excellent academic, athletic and artistic achievements. She has been a consistent volunteer in the community offering her time to Highland’s Safety Town, coaching cheerleading and track, vacation bible school, tutoring and meal packing. Ava is the daughter of Tony and Hilary Mastrianni of Copley Township and plans to study law upon her graduation from Highland.
